CMS finalizes stricter oversight of Accrediting Organizations. On June 12, 2026, CMS finalized changes to the requirements governing all CMS-approved Accrediting Organizations (AOs), including those that accredit ASCs (AAAHC, Joint Commission, QUAD A, DNV). The amendment to 42 CFR Part 488 (Survey, Certification & Enforcement) was published June 16, 2026. Expect tightened survey rigor and reduced conflict-of-interest tolerance. ASC Covered Procedures List expanded by ~560 codes. CMS revised the ASC CPL criteria, eliminated five general exclusion criteria (moving them to nonbinding physician safety considerations), and added 289 procedures plus 271 codes removed from the Inpatient-Only (IPO) list. 2.6% ASC payment rate increase for CY 2026. Based on a 3.3% hospital market basket increase reduced by a 0.7-point productivity adjustment; applies to ASCs meeting quality reporting requirements. DNV Healthcare approved as a new ASC accreditor. CMS granted DNV Healthcare, Inc. initial approval of its ASC accreditation program, effective Dec 8, 2025 through Dec 10, 2029 — a fourth deeming option alongside AAAHC, Joint Commission, and QUAD A. AAAHC v44 Standards now in first full survey year. 2026 is the first full survey year under AAAHC v44, with expanded data-collection/outcomes focus and tighter alignment to state scope-of-practice rules.
